China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and Hong Kong’s Intellectual Property Department (IPD) signed their first agreement in Hong Kong on November 16 to strengthen co-operation in the area of intellectual property (IP).

By attaching a greater importance to IP, it is intended that the agreement will strengthen co-operation between mainland China and Hong Kong, with a view to working together to promote innovation and economic growth.

The Agreement between the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China and the Government of New Zealand for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income has come into effect on November 9, 2011 ( November 10, 2011).

The Agreement was formally signed on December 1, 2010.

On November 8, a double taxation agreement (DTA) between Hong Kong and Malta has been signed.

The comprehensive DTA is the 22nd such agreement concluded by Hong Kong with its trading partners. The agreement should boost closer economic and trade ties between the two places, and provide additional advantages for companies in Malta doing business or invest in Hong Kong, and vice versa.

The comprehensive double taxation agreement (DTA) between Hong Kong and the Netherlands, which had been originally signed on March 22, 2010, entered into force on October 24, 2011.

The agreement contains the usual provisions concerning the avoidance of double taxation with respect to taxes on income as well as a provision concerning the exchange of tax information.

The Hong Kong Companies Registry offers a new service that is the issuance of Commemorative Records of Registration. The said document is a kind of presentation folder and shall not be considered the replacement or equivalence of the Certificate of incorporation or the Certificate of business registration. The company may apply for the Commemorative Record of Registration coinciding it to its anniversary or  any other memorable date.

The 14th Plenary of the Hong Kong- Guangdong Cooperation Joint Conference was held in Hong Kong. The Conference was about the review of Hong Kong- Guangdong cooperation progress over the past year and setting up the directions for cooperation on the coming year.

The RMB settlements conducted through Hong Kong banks reached RMB804 billion during during the first half of the year, almost 30% of which were the settlements between Guangdong and Hong Kong.
